In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, the ghost of King Hamlet is a subtle character who has a major effect on Hamlet during the play. Although he appears very little, the ghost causes Hamlet to not think correctly, not act his normal self, and make people think he has gone insane. The ghost’s presence is not always clear and only speaks to Hamlet in the story, which makes other characters think Hamlet is going crazy. Throughout the play, the ghost only appears four times throughout the play, but every appearance is significant and has an effect on Hamlet. The first time the ghost appears in Act 1 Scene 1, he does not speak but has a major impact here. â€Å"Look where it comes from† (Ham. 1.1.47). Marcellus says this quote, and it makes the reader know the ghost’s presence is known. The ghosts presence is very clear here here. Marcellus, Horatio, and Barnardo all witness the ghost here, making illusion or people just seeing things here not an option. The whole thing about the ghost being real or not comes back later on in Act 3, but for now he is real. The next appearance occurs with Marcellus and Horatio again, but Hamlet witnesses it for the first time also. The ghost would not speak here either, but it signals to Hamlet.
